Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
This is an imbalance in a woman’s hormone levels, the production of higher-than-normal male hormones that result in irregular menstruation and difficulties in conceiving. 70% of women with this syndrome have not been diagnosed, although it affects them at their reproductive age. (see reference link)
Though the exact cause of PCOS is unknown, the condition is treatable as health practitioners associate it with genes and high body inflammation. It’s characterized by excess hair growth on the body, baldness, and dire situations that could result in diabetes or heart disease.
The truth is that most women and girls are not well informed on the inner functioning of their bodies which could be fatal. Skipping a period often comes as a relief to many because they don’t have to deal with cramps, mood swings, and everything that comes with it. What they do not know, however, is that irregular periods is not a contraceptive measure in itself.
Untreated PCOS could result in pregnancy complications such as; miscarriages, premature births, High Blood Pressure, and gestational diabetes. As mentioned earlier, the situation is treatable with birth control pills and diabetes drugs. Progestin, for instance, helps restore average hormonal balance, regulate ovulation, reduce hair growth on the body, and reduces chances of dealing with endometrial cancer. However, the best recommendation to deal with PCOS is to exercise, diet, and check on your lifestyle. Overweight women are most likely to deal with this syndrome.
Since most women aren’t diagnosed, it is vital to take the initiative to check on your reproductive health; otherwise, how will you fully enjoy your reproductive freedom if you are not well informed? Hence the need to regularly visit a gynecologist and keep tabs on your reproductive health.
